Rory finished 3rd in the tournament with a final European Tour Order of Merit Position of 2nd.
To win The Race to Dubai, a player must end his season at the top. Taking place over one full year, this year’s Race To Dubai began in Shanghai with the HSBC Champions event on 6 November 2008 and ended at the Jumeirah Golf Estates on 22 November 2009 with the US $7.5 million Dubai World Championship.
In The Race to Dubai, the European Tour’s top players compete in 49 tournaments in 26 destinations around the globe in a season-long contest that has replaced The European Tour Order of Merit and awards the winner the iconic Harry Vardon Trophy.
Throughout the rivalry, players are ranked according to their earnings from all European Tour events, the Major Championships and the World Golf Championships. The top 60 qualified for the Dubai World Championship and the top 15 players at the close of the tournament shared the US $7.5 million Race to Dubai bonus pool. |

Rory’s 2nd place achievement in Hong Kong put him at the top in the Race To Dubai going into the Dubai World Championship ahead of another ISM player Lee Westwood.
This year’s final event in Dubai was an outstanding climax to the 2009 season with Lee Westwood finally taking the crown.
Rory has confirmed that he will join the US PGA Tour for the 2010 season - he has played eleven events in the US during 2009 including all the majors and the WGC events so only needs to play four more to play the fifteen events required.
"You can see from my efforts in the majors and the World Golf Championships this year that I like to play in those fields because I just seem to be up for them, and they offer a bigger challenge," said Rory "I can't thank the European Tour enough but I'm just in a privileged position where I play wherever I want, and besides I earned enough money in US Tour events to get my card so I've taken out membership."
